*Before the fall
Gen 2:16-17 Yahweh God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; (17) but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, you shall not eat of it; for in the day that you eat of it you will surely die.”
NKJV Gen 3:4 Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die.
*After the fall
Gen 3:19 By the sweat of your face will you eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken. For you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
Gen 4:8 Cain said to Abel, his brother, “Let’s go into the field.” It happened when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel, his brother, and killed him.
Gen 4:10-11 Yahweh said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries to me from the ground. (11) Now you are cursed because of the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.
Gen 5:5 All the days that Adam lived were nine hundred thirty years, then he died.
Basic definitions
Soul (nephesh, neh'-fesh, נפש) a breathing creature
Spirit (ruwach, roo'-akh, רוּחַ) wind; by resemblance breath
Job 12:9-10 Who doesn’t know that in all these, the hand of Yahweh has done this, (10) in whose hand is the life of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind?
Ecc 3:21 Who knows the spirit of man, whether it goes upward, and the spirit of the animal, whether it goes downward to the earth?”
The truth of God is hidden from all but a few
Mat 7:13-14 “Enter in by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and many are those who enter in by it. (14) How narrow is the gate, and restricted is the way that leads to life! Few are those who find it.
Mat 13:11-16 He answered them, “To you it is given to know the mysteries of the Kingdom of Heaven, but it is not given to them. (12) For whoever has, to him will be given, and he will have abundance, but whoever doesn’t have, from him will be taken away even that which he has. (13) Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they don’t see, and hearing, they don’t hear, neither do they understand. (14) In them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled, which says, ‘By hearing you will hear, and will in no way understand; Seeing you will see, and will in no way perceive: (15) for this people’s heart has grown callous, their ears are dull of hearing, they have closed their eyes; or else perhaps they might perceive with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their heart, and should turn again; and I would heal them.’ (16) “But blessed are your eyes, for they see; and your ears, for they hear.
Mat 11:25-26 At that time, Yeshua answered, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you hid these things from the wise and understanding, and revealed them to infants. (26) Yes, Father, for so it was well-pleasing in your sight.
Mat 24:11 Many false prophets will arise, and will lead many astray.
2Ti 4:3-4 For the time will come when they will not listen to the sound doctrine, but, having itching ears, will heap up for themselves teachers after their own lusts; (4) and will turn away their ears from the truth, and turn aside to fables.
1Co 2:14 Now the natural man doesn’t receive the things of God’s Spirit, for they are foolishness to him, and he can’t know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
2Co 4:3-4 Even if our Good News is veiled, it is veiled in those who perish; (4) in whom the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving, that the light of the Good News of the glory of Messiah, who is the image of God, should not dawn on them.
Gen 19:11 They struck the men who were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great, so that they wearied themselves to find the door.
You can only find the truth when you seek God
with all of your heart.
Deu 4:29 But from there you shall seek Yahweh your God, and you shall find him, when you search after him with all your heart and with all your soul.
Jer 29:13 You shall seek me, and find me, when you shall search for me with all your heart.

The soul of animals
Gen 1:21 God created the large sea creatures, and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarmed, after their kind, and every winged bird after its kind. God saw that it was good.
Gen 1:24 God said, “Let the earth produce living creatures after their kind, livestock, creeping things, and animals of the earth after their kind;” and it was so.
Pro 12:10 A righteous man respects the life of his animal, but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.
The soul of man
Gen 2:7 Yahweh God formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
KJV Lev 5:2 Or if a soul touch any unclean thing, whether it be a carcase of an unclean beast, or a carcase of unclean cattle, or the carcase of unclean creeping things, and if it be hidden from him; he also shall be unclean, and guilty.
The soul of man and animals together
Num 31:28 Levy a tribute to Yahweh of the men of war who went out to battle: one soul of five hundred; of the persons, of the cattle, of the donkeys, and of the flocks.
A living soul has an appetite and eats food
Pro 6:30 Men don’t despise a thief, if he steals to satisfy himself when he is hungry:
KJV Isa 29:8 It shall even be as when an hungry man dreameth, and, behold, he eateth; but he awaketh, and his soul is empty: or as when a thirsty man dreameth, and, behold, he drinketh; but he awaketh, and, behold, he is faint, and his soul hath appetite: so shall the multitude of all the nations be, that fight against mount Zion.
Lev 17:10-11 “‘Any man of the house of Israel, or of the strangers who live as foreigners among them, who eats any kind of blood, I will set my face against that soul who eats blood, and will cut him off from among his people. (11) For the life of the flesh is in the blood; and I have given it to you on the altar to make atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that makes atonement by reason of the life.
Souls are subject to death
Psa 22:20 Deliver my soul from the sword, my precious life from the power of the dog.
1Ki 19:10 He said, “I have been very jealous for Yahweh, the God of Armies; for the children of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and slain your prophets with the sword. I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.”
Souls being killed by man
Deu 27:25 ‘Cursed is he who takes a bribe to kill an innocent person.’ All the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
Lev 24:17-18 “‘He who strikes any man mortally shall surely be put to death. (18) He who strikes an animal mortally shall make it good, life for life.
Souls actually dead
Num 6:6 “‘All the days that he separates himself to Yahweh he shall not go near a dead body.
Lev 21:11 neither shall he go in to any dead body, nor defile himself for his father, or for his mother;
Souls die in the New Testament
All references quoted so far have been from the Old Testament. That is the foundation of the New, and the word "soul" occurs in the Old seven times as often as in the New. It is ignoring the foundation work of the Old Testament that has prevented so many from understanding the New. "Soul" in the New Testament cannot be considered apart from soul in the Old. Considering them together, we find them in complete harmony. As in the Old, so in the New, "soul" is used of animals; it is spoken of as dying; it is used for the mind, the heart, the appetite and the emotions. Whenever speakers in the New Testament quote from passages in the Old containing the Hebrew word nephesh, they use the Greek word psuche.
KJV Rev 8:9 And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed.
Rev 16:3 The second angel poured out his bowl into the sea, and it became blood as of a dead man. Every living thing in the sea died.
Our soul eats and drinks
Mat 6:25 Therefore, I tell you, don’t be anxious for your life: what you will eat, or what you will drink; nor yet for your body, what you will wear. Isn’t life more than food, and the body more than clothing?
Souls subject to death
Act 15:25-26 our beloved Barnabas and Paul, (26) men who have risked their lives for the name of our Lord Yeshua the Messiah.
Php 2:29-30 Receive him therefore in the Lord with all joy, and hold such in honor, (30) because for the work of Messiah he came near to death, risking his life to supply that which was lacking in your service toward me.
In faithfully serving Christ, they certainly could not have been hazarding immortal souls, but they were hazarding their scriptural souls - their natural lives and bodies. Joh 10:15 even as the Father knows me, and I know the Father. I lay down my life for the sheep. In all these, psuche is used In the common sense of natural life, and cannot be harmonized with the immortal soul idea.
Are souls indestructible?
Mat 10:28 Don’t be afraid of those who kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul. Rather, fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in Gehinnom.
Mar 3:4 He said to them, “Is it lawful on the Sabbath day to do good, or to do harm? To save a life, or to kill?” But they were silent.
The words nephesh and psuche, translated "soul," occur 850 times in the Bible and in not one case is there any suggestion of immortality.
1Co 15:51-53 Behold, I tell you a mystery. We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed, (52) in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last shofar. For the shofar will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we will be changed. (53) For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
The world believes that the human soul continues to live when the body dies. The world believes that the soul relocates when a person stops living. The world believes a dead person will retain consciousness, full mental faculties, and full emotional capacity. The bible, however, teaches us that a living soul is an integral part of a living body. The human soul cannot operate apart from a living body. Of course God can overrule this with an extraordinary miracle such as Samuel rising from the grave. The reality, however, is that souls can and do die when people die. The good news is that dead people will rise again to meet Yeshua our Savior. He is the Judge of all the earth. The resurrection of the dead is our hope, not the resurrection of the living.
1Co 15:13 But if there is no resurrection of the dead, neither has Messiah been raised.
This phrase “resurrection of the dead” occurs 11 times in the New Testament. What is the definition of dead? What does it mean to die?
Yahweh Almighty said “you will surely die.” (Gen 2:17)
The cunning serpent said, “You will not surely die.” (Gen 3:4)
Who do you believe and who do you trust? Do you listen to Yahweh or the enemy? Do you hear Yahweh’s true definitions or the serpent’s lies?
Today we worked on the biblical definition of “you.” The definition of what it means to “die” is also under attack today. The world believes that death equals life in heaven or life in hell. When did death become life? Let us reject the serpent’s voice and seek the voice of our heavenly Father and his Son, Yeshua. Don’t be deceived. Seek Yahweh with all your heart and the truth that is with him will be made known to you.
