Judgment

The Second Death

Revelation 2:11
He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes will not be hurt at all by the second death.

Revelation 20:6
Blessed and holy are those who have part in the first resurrection. The second death has no power over them, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him for a thousand years.

Revelation 20:13-14
The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done. Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death.

Revelation 21:8
But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death."

The following examples highlight some of the scriptural references to the second death.

John 5:24
"I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.

John 8:51
I tell you the truth, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death."

John 11:1, 4
Now a man named Lazarus was sick. 4When he heard this, Yeshua said, "This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God's glory so that God's Son may be glorified through it."

Romans 6:16
Don't you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?

Romans 8:13
For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live,

2 Corinthians 7:10
Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.

James 5:20
remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save him from death and cover over a multitude of sins.

The Unquenchable Fire

Luke 3:16-18
John answered them all, "I baptize you with water. But one more powerful than I will come, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire."

Romans 12:19
Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," says the Lord.

Jeremiah 4:4
Circumcise yourselves to Yahweh, circumcise your hearts, you men of Judah and people of Jerusalem, or my wrath will break out and burn like fire because of the evil you have done— burn with no one to quench it.

Jeremiah 21:12
O house of David, this is what Yahweh says: " 'Administer justice every morning; rescue from the hand of his oppressor the one who has been robbed, or my wrath will break out and burn like fire because of the evil you have done— burn with no one to quench it.

Isaiah 66:22-24
From one New Moon to another and from one Sabbath to another, all mankind will come and bow down before me," says Yahweh. "And they will go out and look upon the dead bodies of those who rebelled against me; their worm will not die, nor will their fire be quenched, and they will be loathsome to all mankind."

Mark 9:47-48
And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell, where " 'their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.

Understanding The Word Destroy

Destroy

Thefreedictionary.com
1. To ruin completely; spoil: The ancient manuscripts were destroyed by fire.
2. To tear down or break up; demolish. See Synonyms at ruin.
3. To do away with; put an end to
4. To kill: destroy a rabid dog.

From a presumed derivative of G622; ruin or loss (physical, spiritual or eternal): - damnable (-nation), destruction, die, perdition, X perish, pernicious ways, waste.

Luke 6:9
Then Yeshua said to them, "I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?"

John 10:10
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

Philippians 1:27-28
Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in one spirit, contending as one man for the faith of the gospel without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved—and that by God.

Hebrews 10:39
But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who believe and are saved.

James 4:12
There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy.

Matthew 10:28
Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

Understanding The Word Perish

Perish

Thefreedictionary.com
1. To die or be destroyed, especially in a violent or untimely manner
2. To pass from existence; disappear gradually

g622
From G575 and the base of G3639; to destroy fully (reflexively to perish, or lose), literally or figuratively: - destroy, die, lose, mar, perish.

John 3:16
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

John 10:28
I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand.

1 Corinthians 1:18
For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

2 Corinthians 2:14-16
But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him. For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. To the one we are the smell of death; to the other, the fragrance of life.

2 Thessalonians 2:9-10
The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders, and in every sort of evil that deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.

Psalm 68:2
As smoke is blown away by the wind, may you blow them away; as wax melts before the fire, may the wicked perish before God.

2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

Eternal Life vs. Eternal Death

Romans 5:17
For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God's abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Yeshua Messiah.

Romans 5:21
so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Yeshua Messiah our Lord.

Romans 6:13
Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness.

Romans 6:20-22
When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death! But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life.

Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Yeshua Messiah our Lord.

Romans 8:2
because through Yeshua Messiah the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.

Romans 8:6
The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace;

1 John 3:14
We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love our brothers. Anyone who does not love remains in death.

Eternal Life vs. Eternal Punishment

Matthew 25:46
"Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life."

*The punishment is death and that death is eternal.  The second death is not sleep and it is not a conscious existence.  If death is a conscious life of torment, then the dead must also have eternal life to be able to experience the torment.  Death is the absence of life.  The reality of death is made plain in scripture.  Do we have ears to hear?

I freely admit that the following verse seems to indicate that there is conscious torment in the lake of fire.  It also appears that this torment lasts forever.

Revelation 20:10
And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

* We all have to seek the truth for ourselves.  This study reveals many clear verses that teach us that death is the unconscious absence of life.  What does the weight of the scriptural evidence tell us?  If there seems to be a discrepancy between two views, we must go with the view that harmonizes with the whole of scripture.

Yahweh’s wrath is tempered with mercy.

Habakkuk 3:2
Yahweh, I have heard of your fame; I stand in awe of your deeds, O Yahweh. Renew them in our day, in our time make them known; in wrath remember mercy.

Luke 6:36
Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

Matthew 5:44-45
But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.

Proverbs 28:5
Evil men do not understand justice, but those who seek Yahweh understand it fully.

Types and shadows of the second death

Joshua 7:24-26
Then Joshua, together with all Israel, took Achan son of Zerah, the silver, the robe, the gold wedge, his sons and daughters, his cattle, donkeys and sheep, his tent and all that he had, to the Valley of Achor. Joshua said, "Why have you brought this trouble on us? Yahweh will bring trouble on you today." Then all Israel stoned him, and after they had stoned the rest, they burned them.  Over Achan they heaped up a large pile of rocks, which remains to this day. Then Yahweh turned from his fierce anger. Therefore that place has been called the Valley of Achor ever since.

Numbers 16:25-35
25 Moses got up and went to Dathan and Abiram, and the elders of Israel followed him.  He warned the assembly, "Move back from the tents of these wicked men! Do not touch anything belonging to them, or you will be swept away because of all their sins." So they moved away from the tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiram. Dathan and Abiram had come out and were standing with their wives, children and little ones at the entrances to their tents.

28 Then Moses said, "This is how you will know that Yahweh has sent me to do all these things and that it was not my idea: 29 If these men die a natural death and experience only what usually happens to men, then Yahweh has not sent me. 30 But if Yahweh brings about something totally new, and the earth opens its mouth and swallows them, with everything that belongs to them, and they go down alive into the grave, then you will know that these men have treated Yahweh with contempt."

31 As soon as he finished saying all this, the ground under them split apart and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them, with their households and all Korah's men and all their possessions. They went down alive into the grave, with everything they owned; the earth closed over them, and they perished and were gone from the community. At their cries, all the Israelites around them fled, shouting, "The earth is going to swallow us too!"

35 And fire came out from Yahweh and consumed the 250 men who were offering the incense.

The Wicked Are No More

* The judgment and punishment for rejecting God is eternal death.  With no life to sustain them, the wicked are permanently no more.

Proverbs 12:7
Wicked men are overthrown and are no more, but the house of the righteous stands firm.

Psalm 37:10
A little while, and the wicked will be no more; though you look for them, they will not be
found.

Psalm 104:35
But may sinners vanish from the earth and the wicked be no more. Praise Yahweh, O my soul. Praise Yahweh.

Nahum 1:15
Look, there on the mountains, the feet of one who brings good news, who proclaims peace! Celebrate your festivals, O Judah, and fulfill your vows. No more will the wicked invade you; they will be completely destroyed.

* Remember the parable of Lazarus and the rich man.  They could find the condemned rich man and even talk to him.  Scripture reveals the truth that after the final judgment, the wicked will be no more – they will be extinct.  Only during the final judgment will the righteous and unrighteous have some closing interactions.  After the punishment of death is carried out, the wicked will never again have any part in God’s creation.

The bible does not teach us about spiritual life without our living body.  The saints hope is to take part in the first resurrection when the Son of God returns the second time.  The resurrection will take place immediately after death from the person’s own perspective.  Just like our own experience with sleep, the dead are unconscious during their sleep in the grave.  As the first death is complete unconsciousness, so is the second death.  We must reject false teaching that originates outside of the truth of scripture.  The pagans believe life will go on in another form after our body dies.  The bible teaches us that our first body will not be found in our tomb when we are resurrected.  Instead God’s faithful people will have a new glorified spiritual body - a body that can touch, eat, see, hear, and talk.  It is not a ghostly body, but it is a new body.  In that body we will experience God’s love in his new kingdom.  Our hope is life after death, not life during death.
